Something Better to Do - Olivia Newton-John (1975) 1/4/23

Olivia Newton-John's longtime collaborator, John Farrar, thought today's "Great Song of 1975" was rather silly--and he wrote it!

For the record, Olivia agreed, but recorded it anyway.

Farrar had written "Something Better to Do" as a jaunty little breakup song--the kind of tune you might hear in a movie musical of the '40s or '50s.

It's sad, but sunny, which makes it sort of a a musical oxymoron.

It almost sounds like Olivia is skipping down a country lane without a care in the world, singing about how the birds who used to complement her now-broken romance with their chirping will now have to find "something better to do..." Until her lover comes back to her, of course!

But really, that's the beauty of the song. It's so positive and upbeat in the face of heartbreak, you can't help but smile and hope for a better love down the lane.

It was never intended to be a single...but it was so catchy....

It was released as the lead single from the album "Clearly Love," and it went straight to #1 on the Adult Contemporary Charts in the US & Canada. It also reached #13 on Billboard's Hot 100, and #19 on the Country Chart.

"Something Better to Do" by Olivia Newton-John. It may be silly, but in its silliness lies its greatness. It's a "Great Song of 1975! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V27r6_KeQ54
