As you are most likely aware, Sinead O'Connor passed away on Wednesday at the age of 56.
You can read her comprehensive obituary below, courtesy of NPR. https://www.npr.org/.../irish-singer-sinead-oconnor-has...
When you do, you'll get an idea of just how disturbing and sad her life truly was, and how she was a victim of several things that were out of her control--including mental illness.
But in the midst of all the pain, she had one Great Song, which made her a star...and led to even more problems.
Granted, "Nothing Compares 2U" wasn't released until 1990, but I'm making an exception and including it in my Great Songs of the 70s/80s blog...because of the worldwide scope of its popularity.
The song was written by Prince for his side project, "The Family," but it wasn't released as a single until 2018 and was a minor chart hit. Prince himself released a version in the mid '90s, which also became a minor hit.
But back to Sinead...
Her powerful version was universally praised by music critics, and a worldwide chart Juggernaut, reaching #1 in 19 countries, including the US & Canada!
This brought fame and fortune to Sinead...but it also brought trouble and misfortune... epitomized by her infamous appearance on SNL. (You can read about that in the obit above.
"Nothin' Compares 2U:"a "Great Song of 1990, and one shining moment of light in the dark and troubled life of Sinead O'Connor. R.I.P.
