Canadian Les Emmerson was driving through California when he noticed that a lot of the beautiful scenery was blocked by billboards. That gave him an idea.
That idea turned into a "Great Song of the '70s for his group, The Five Man Electrical Band!
But It took awhile. In 1970, it was released as the B-side to a song ("Hello, Melinda, Goodbye") that barely scratched the bottom of the Canadian Chart and sank without a trace in the U.S.
Luckily, the record company decided to re-release "Signs" as an A-side...and, imagine that: #3 in the U.S., #4 in Canada, and #5 in Australia!
The group Tesla covered it in 1990 and it hit the Billboard Top 10, but I won't link it because they decided it to pepper it with F-Bombs. You're welcome.
So here's the original version...A "Great Song" for all you long-haired freaky people out there. :-)
