Singer/Songwriter Roland Ozabal claims that it's a common misconception that today's Great Song of 1985 is about primal scream therapy: confronting your fears by shouting and screaming.
Roland says that "Shout" by Tears for Fears is actually a simple protest song.
But wait a minute...
Roland himself was a proponent of primal scream therapy, and the name Tears for Fears came from psychologist Arthur Janov's book "Prisoners of Pain." (Janov virtually invented PST.)
Regardless of what the song is about, "Shout" struck a chord with music lovers worldwide, topping the charts in 9 countries, including the US and Canada, and reaching the Top 10 in 6 more. In the US alone, it reached #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 and Dance Charts, as well as #6 on the Top Rock Tracks Chart.
Many musicologists believe that "Shout" is one of the most recognizable songs of the decade...and its hard to disagree.
Not bad for a song that Roland thought would be a great album cut, but never make it as a single. :)
"Shout" by Tears for Fears...definitely a Great Song of the '80s!
