1977 and 1978 were filled with "Great Songs," many of them chart toppers from films like "Saturday Night Fever" and "Grease."
But there was another film that threw a song into the mix.
The song was a remake, it was never released as a single and it never charted...and yet...if you were a club jock or a DJ who did record hops, wedding receptions and other parties...it was an essential song to have on hand when you wanted to whip the crowd into a frenzy.
The Isley Brothers wrote and recorded the original version back in 1959, and although it peaked at just #47 on Billboard's Hot 100, it has been covered by more than 50--count 'em--50 artists since then! Joey Dee & the Starliters took it to #6 in 1962, and other notable versions were recorded by Lulu, Tommy James, Tom Petty, Joan Jett...and The Beatles.)
The University of Oregon Ducks and the NFL's Buffalo Bills use it to rally their fans.
In 1999, "SHOUT" was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and Rolling Stone Magazine has ranked at #118 on their list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time!"
Of the many, many versions of the song, the version I consider to be a "Great Song of the '70s" is by the fictional group, Otis Day & The Knights...from the 1978 movie: "ANIMAL HOUSE!"
