Shame on the Moon - Bob Seger (1983) 11/20/23

Writer's picture: Michael CookMichael Cook

Over the course of his career, Bob Seger has written the vast majority of his hits...but "Shame on the Moon," Bob's Great Song

of 1983 was written by Rodney Crowell, who recorded it first in 1981.

Bob was a bit hesitant to record it for his album, "The Distance."

He felt it it sounded like sort of a "cowboy western song" and didn't think it would fit

into the theme of the album.

But after recording the song in less than two hours, Bob and everyone else in the studio--and at Capitol Records--felt that "Shame on the Moon" was "the miracle track." In other words: a hit!

And everyone was right! It was added to the album, released as a single...and promptly marched to #1 on the Adult Contemporary Charts in the US & Canada. It also reached #2 on Billboard's Hot 100 and #8 on Canada's Top 40!

Bob was quick to thank Rodney for the song, so with that in mind: "Shame on the Moon" by Bob Seger and Rodney Crowell is a "Great Song of 1983!

Tomorrow: Lionel says Hello.
