Shame - Evelyn "Champagne" King (1978) 12/7/21

In 1977, 17-year-old Evelyn "Champagne" King released her debut album, "Smooth Talk," and the word "Smooth" was certainly accurate.

In fact, one of the smoothest disco songs of all time came from that album, and by 1978, it had most certainly become a "Great Song of the '70s."

"Shame" was 4 minutes and 38 seconds of uptempo ballroom dance music that took the discos by storm (Here in Eau Claire, the Arthur Murray crowd loved to get out on the floor at Fanny Hill's Top of the Town Disco and really show their stuff).

In fact, the song became such a dance favorite, RCA records released an extended version for club play, coming in at 6 minutes and 35 seconds!

Both versions were Top 10 hits: The original version reached #7 on the Soul Chart and #9 on the Hot 100. The extended version reached #8 on the Dance Chart.

Quite an accomplishment for a 17-year-old! (Trivia: the nickname "Champaign" came from Evelyn's "bubbly" personality.)

"Shame" by Evelyn "Champagne" King; fast, smooth, and a "Great Song of 1978!"
