(Shake Shake Shake) Shake Your Booty (1976) 5/29/20

Some people thought today's “Great Song of the '70s” was full of sexual innuendos. Harry Wayne Casey said those people were thinking too hard.

Casey, of course is the “K.C.” of K.C. and the Sunshine Band, and the song in question is 1976's “(Shake Shake Shake) Shake Your Booty.”

According to Harry, he wrote the song after a club performance where he noticed a small group of people who seemed to be consciously avoiding the dance floor. So basically, the song was a call to dance—and nothing more.

In any event, it worked! In my experience as a club DJ, it never failed to fill the floor. It also was a HUGE radio hit. The charts tell the story. In the US, it was #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 and Soul Charts, while coming in at #6 on the Disco Chart. In Canada, it topped the Top 40! It was also a Top 25 hit in 10 other countries. And here's some trivia for you: "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty" holds the record for being the only number-one song title with a word repeated more than three times in it. So here's today's “Great Song of the '70s.” Now GET UP AND DANCE!
