In 1976. Shirley Eikhard took a song called "Say You Love Me" to #4 on the Canadian Adult Contemporary Chart.
Several weeks later, the ORIGINAL version of the song made it to #19 on the SAME chart.
The interesting twist to this story is that Shirley topped Fleetwood Mac with their OWN SONG (written and originally sung by Christine McVie).
True, the song was Fleetwood Mac's 4th single from their self-titled album, so it had been available for artists to cover for a while, but the fact that Shirley was able to top what has turned out to be an iconic Fleetwood Mac song is pretty impressive.
Here in the States, however, things were different--but only slightly. "Say You Love Me" just missed the Top 10 on TWO Billboard charts: The Hot 100 (#11) and Adult Contemporary (#12).
But then in 1979, one-hit wonder Stephanie Winslow took her cover version to #10 on Billboard's COUNTRY chart.
So basically, two covers of an iconic song out-charted the original!
That's rare...and it's proof that "Say You Love Me" was a "Great Song of the '70s," no matter who sang it! (Note: Each artist brought their own interpretation to the turntable. Check out all 3!)
