n 1985, one of the most iconic underground album rock bands of all time was going through some big changes.
Jefferson Airplane, which had already morphed into Jefferson Starship, was now dropping the "Jefferson" and morphing into just "Starship," while moving into mainstream pop...all coinciding with the arrival of new lead singer Mickey Thomas, and their 1986 album release, "Knee Deep in the Hoopla."
The second single from the album, "Sara," became an instant hit in 13 countries, with Mickey in fine voice and original member Grace Slick handling the harmonies.
It was Starship's second US #1 Hot100 hit in a row after "We Built This City," and also their first #1 on the Adult Contemporary Chart.
Fun Fact #1: The song was named after Sara Kendrick, Mickey's wife at the time.
Fun Fact #2: The video featured actress Rebeca DeMornay in a somewhat ominous breakup story partially set in the dust bowl of the 1930s.
"Sara" by Starship: signaling a new direction for the group, and a Great Song of 1986!
Tomorrow: More Mandolin!
