Back in the '50s, singer Bobby Day had a few minor hits, and one "Great Song:" 1958's "Rockin' Robin!"
The song was 2-and-a half minutes of "fast and fun," that reached #1 on Billboard's Rhythm & Blues Chart, #2 on The Hot 100, and #3 in Canada.
Fourteen Years later, Michael Jackson--who was BORN in 1958--made it a "Great Song of 1972" with HIS version, which made it to #2 on Billboard's Soul Chart and The Hot 100.
It might have made it to #1 on both charts, but unfortunately, it ran up against Roberta Flack's "The First Time Ever I saw Your Face," which was in the middle of a 6-week run at #1 on almost EVERY chart (except country, of course), on its way to becoming the #1 song of the year!
That takes nothing away from Michael, who matched Bobby Day with his OWN 2-and-a-half minutes of "fast and "fun."
(Note: Michael's version replaced the piccolo solo with a guitar solo.)
"Rockin' Robin:" It's a "Great Song of 1972--and 1958!
