Rockin' Me (1976) 5/18/20

Since 1974, the recurring Knebworth Festival in London has booked some of the biggest acts in Rock & Roll...attracting crowds ranging from 20,000 to 150,000.

On July 5th 1976, nearly 100,000 people turned out for a great lineup that included Pink Floyd, Captain Beefheart and The Steve Miller Band. (Monty Python was also booked for a comedy set!)

Steve knew well in advance that the concert was going to be big, and he also knew his time slot was going to be at dusk when the air would be cooling off quickly, so he thought he'd write a song that would lead off his set and heat things up from the get-go.

“Rock'n Me” turned out to be a “Great Song of the '70s.”

The crowd loved it, and later, when Steve & his band released it as a single (off the album “Fly Like an Eagle”), radio listeners loved it, too!

The fact that the lyrics mentioned Phoenix, Tacoma, Philadelphia, Atlanta and L.A. might have helped it get airplay in those cities, but it was popular EVERYWHERE!

It went right to #1 in the US and Canada, #3 in South Africa and #11 in the UK.

More recently, “Rock'n Me” has been featured in a number of video games, including as a playable option in “Rock Band 2.” So not only was it a “Great Song of '76,” it's still a “Great Song” today!
