Rock Your Baby - George McRae (1974) 4/20/22

Throughout the mid-to-late '70s, Harry Wayne Casey and Rick Finch wrote a bunch of "Great Songs" for their group, KC and the Sunshine Band. ("Get Down Tonight," "I'm Your Boogie Man," etc...)

But before the Sunshine Band was born, Harry and Rick wrote a song that sold more than 11 MILLION copies--one of only 26 songs ever to reach that total!

And they didn't even write it for themselves!

In 1974, "George McCrea" took "Rock Your Baby," (which was also produced and backed by Harry & Rick) into the Top 10 in 14 countries, reaching #1 in 10 of those 14: Austria, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Italy, Norway, Sweden, the UK, Canada and the US!

"Rock Your Baby" was one of the earliest disco hits, and not only did it have a "sound" that Harry & Rick would continue to develop with The Sunshine Band, it influenced several other artists. John Lennon used the chord progression in his hit "Whatever Gets You Through the Night," and ABBA's Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus claim it influenced the backing track for "Dancing Queen."

As for George McCrae? He had a few other minor hits, but by 1977, he had faded from the scene. That's a shame, but hopefully 11 million copies of "Rock Your Baby" was a nice consolation. It truly was--and-is--a "Great Song of the '70's!" "Rock Your Baby" (1974):
