Rock Me Gently - Andy Kim (1974) 10/7/21

In the late '60s, Canadian singer/songwriter Andrew Youakim had quite a streak going.

Not only did he have a hit record to his credit: 1969's "Baby I Love You" (#1 in Canada and #6 in the US), he also co-wrote and sang on the #1 song of '69: "Sugar Sugar" by the Archies, which topped the charts in Canada, the UK and the US.

Of course, you may remember Andrew by his stage name: Andy Kim.

Unfortunately, by 1974, he was pretty much washed up--or so the record industry thought. He couldn't get a contract with anyone...so he decided to form his OWN company, Ice Records...and self-finance a song he truly believed would be a hit: "Rock Me Gently."

Andy was vindicated! The song went to #1 in the US and Canada, #2 in the UK, and #3 in South Africa. In the process, it became a "Great Song of 1974!"

(Trivia: Andy didn't have enough money to finance a second song, so the "B" side of the single was the instrumental version of "Rock Me Gently.")

(Trivia #2: Andy also co-wrote and sang on the Archies' other big hit, 1970's "Jingle Jangle." which we highlighted back on 1/31/21: https://www.facebook.com/MichaelCuuuk/posts/274127737394014
