Daryl Hall and songwriter Sara Allen dated for many years, but the partnership was more than just romantic. They wrote many songs together (“Sara Smile.” for instance), including today's “Great Song of the '70s.”
Before Daryl, Sara dated a guy named Victor Walker. One day, Victor stopped by their apartment, and Daryl got the distinct impression that he was more than just a little bit "entitled." Victor came from a rich family and basically thought he could do anything he wanted, because if he got in trouble, his daddy would bail him out.
That inspired Daryl to write the lyric, “He can rely on his old man's money. He's a rich guy...”
Well, that didn't really sound right...so he changed the gender of the protagonist and “Rich Girl” was born.
In 1977, Daryl Hall and John Oates, took “Rich Girl” to #1 on Billboard's Hot 100. In Canada, it went to #5, and Australia, it peaked at #6.
It was the first of 6 #1 songs for the pair—thanks to Sara Allen's entitled ex-boyfriend. Word has it that Victor knew it was really about him...and LOVED it!
