During their time together as husband and wife, Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson wrote close to 100 "Great Songs."
These include "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing," "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," "Reach Out and Touch Somebody's Hand," "Solid (As a Rock)" and so many others.
They wrote for almost every Motown artist you can name... including themselves...and if Nick hadn't died too young at age 60 in 2011, there's no doubt they'd still be writing and performing "Great Songs" today.
On of the many songs they wrote for Diana Ross was 1971's "Remember Me."
Diana had recently gone solo, and was already on a hot streak when the song was released in early December of 1970.
Just after the new year, it climbed to #10 on Billboard's Soul Chart and #16 on the Hot 100. In Canada, it peaked at #9 on the Top 40.
Nick and Valerie crafted an upbeat post-breakup song to be sung by a woman who is asking her "ex" to remember the good times--as well as all the good things she brought to the relationship.
Diana was great at singing post-breakup songs, and "Remember Me" was no exception. Thanks to Nick, Valerie and Diana, it's a "Great Song of 1971."
Tomorrow: A look at 1972. Coming Soon: Great Songs of the '80s!
