In 1969, Jackie DeShannon released the quintessential "Peace and Love" song for an era of protest--against the Vietnam War and other issues of the day.
Jackie co-wrote "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" with her brother Randy Myers and friend Jimmy Holiday...and they definitely tapped into the mindset of young adults everywhere.
The song reached #2 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart and #4 on the Hot 100. In South Africa, where apartheid was still in full force, it went to #1.
In 1988, when the film "Scrooged" (starring Bill Murray) was released to theatres, a new version of the song was played over the end credits.
This time, it was a duet between The Rev. Al Green and Annie Lennox of Eurhythmics. That seems likes like an odd pairing, but actually, their version turned out to be an upbeat--and fun--cover that both of them infused with positive energy.
In early 1989, it reached #2 in Canada, #4 in Austria, #6 in Australia, #7 in New Zealand, and here in the US: #9 on the Hot 100. Interestingly, however, it did not chart in South Africa.
Be that as it may, Al & Annie's version of "Put a Little Love in Your "Heart took a Great Song of 1969 by Jackie DeShannon, and turned it into a Great Song of 1989!
