1984's "Purple Rain" Soundtrack album by Prince & The Revolution is an all time classic, jam-packed with Great Songs from the film.
Today, we're highlighting the album's FOURTH big hit: "I Would Die 4 U." (We'll get to the other 3 eventually.)
In the lyrics, Prince echoes the Bible while expressing his devotion to his lover.
The song title itself is an example, and other examples include: "If you're evil, I'll forgive you," All I really need 2 know is that U believe," and "I'm you're messiah."
"I Would Die 4 U" is a lightning fast, but danceable tune that, in early 1985, reached #8 on Billboard's Hot 100 and #11 on the Rhythm & Blues/Hip Hop Chart.
TRIVIA: Prince used a state-of-the-art programmable drum machine to create the rhythms, but in concert, the process was rather unwieldy, so he turned percussion duties over to the very LIVE Sheila E., giving her quite a workout.
