Puppy Love -Donny Osmond (1972) 10/27/22

In 1960, 19-year-old Canadian Pop Star Paul Anka was smitten with a young woman who had recorded one of his songs.

The song was an instrumental originally titled "Toot Sweet," but Paul had rewritten it, added lyrics, retitled it "It's Really Love," and handed it over to his crush...Original Mouseketeer Annette Funicello!

That was the song he wrote FOR her. The song he then wrote ABOUT her, became a "Great 'pre-bubblegum' song of the '60s...which became a "Great 'Bubble Gum' Song of the '70s:" "Puppy Love" by Donny Osmond.

Paul's version went to #2 on Billboard's Hot 100, and #4 on the Canadian Top 40.

Donny, riding the wave of "Osmania" in 1972, took HIS version to #1 in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, and #3 on Billboard's Hot 100.

That made "Puppy Love" a "Great Song" in two different decades...but even so, it was topped by Paul's original "Toot Sweet/It's Really Love."

He reworked it one last time, took the lyrics back out, and created one of the most iconic TV Themes of all time...for "The Tonight Show, starring Johnny Carson! Don't believe me? Click the links below!
