Promises - Eric Clapton (1979) 12/30/21

One critic described today's "Great Song of 1979" as as an understated pop shuffle, but most people think of "Promises" by Eric Clapton as country rock--along the same lines of as his previous hit "Lay Down Sally," which we highlighted back on 12/22/20. https://www.facebook.com/MichaelCuuuk/posts/250399259766862

But it really doesn't matter what genre you assign it to, because Clapton did an excellent job with it (of course!)--and included some fine background vocals by Marcy (Detroit) Levy who, NOT coincidentally, wrote "Lay Down Sally!"

"Promises" was released as a single in late 1978 (from the album "Backless") and by the time 1979 rolled around, it had become an international hit...reaching #6 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart and #9 on the Hot 100. In Canada, it reached #7 on the Top 40.

The song was most successful in Norway, of all places, where it went to #1 on their Country Chart! Who knew Country music was popular in Scandinavia!?
