Pour Some Sugar on Me - Def Leppard (1988) 6/21/23

When Joe Elliott, front man for Def Leppard was asked what his musical influences were, he said, "Everything I've ever listened to!"

Today's Great Song of 1987 (sort of) proves the point: The title was inspired by the #1 song of 1969: "Sugar Sugar" by The Archies.

You read that correctly.

Near the end of the cartoon band's hit, they sang "Pour a little sugar on me, honey," and that became the title of Dep Leppard's most successful hit!

Of course, Def Leppard being Def Leppard, they turned it into a sexual euphemism, and then filled the rest of the lyrics with more euphemisms--just vague enough to barely avoid censorship. (I'll let you figure them out.)

Note: Joe also claims the song was partially inspired by the Aerosmith/Run DMC version of "Walk This Way."

In 1987, the song was released from the album, "Hysteria," and in 1988, it reached #2 on Billboard's Hot 100...while selling more than 3 Million copies worldwide.

And then...

MTV ranked "Pour Some Sugar on Me" at #1 on its "Top 300 Videos of All Time" countdown in1991, and In 2006, VH1 placed it at #2 on its list of the "100 Greatest Songs of the '80s!
