Some Christmas songs take a while to catch on...slowly inching their way toward becoming a standard.
Today, we're looking at "Please Come Home for Christmas" by Charles Brown: a song that started slow with its initial release in1960 (#76 on Billboard's Christmas Singles Chart.)...but by 1972, It had reached #1!
Then, in 1978, The Eagles' version became a "Great Song of the '70s," when it did something no other Christmas song had done since 1963's "Pretty Paper" by Roy Orbison: It cracked the top 20 on Billboard's REGULAR Hot 100, peaking at number 18!
In 1992, Jon Bon Jovi released a version that was a Top 10 hit in the UK and much of Europe, and after that, a blizzard of covers blew in from some pretty notable names...including Willie Nelson, Martina McBride, and in 2013: Kelly Clarkson.
Kelly's version has been the most successful so far: #6 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart, and #14 on Billboard's Digital Download Christmas Chart, as well as Canada's A.C. Chart.
No doubt about it: "Please Come Home for Christmas" has been a "Great Christmas Song" for the better part of SIXTY years--including the '70s! Check all the links below, and ENJOY! Charles Brown: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpQyCYV4F70
