Singer/Songwriter Dave Loggins is most famous for his 1972 hit, "Please Come to Boston," which we highlighted back on 6/6/20: https://www.facebook.com/page/103016317838491/search/?q=dave%20loggins
But Dave wrote and recorded another "Great Song" in 1972. Unfortunately, he didn't hit the charts with it.
The honor instead went to Three Dog Night.
Or maybe I should say, ONE Dog Night.
According to singer Chuck Negron, the group was in the middle of producing their "Seven Separate Fools" album in London when Cory Wells and Danny Hutton left town before it was completed. That left Chuck to sing "Pieces of April" all by himself.
It was the second and final time in the group's history that only one of the three lead vocalists sang on one of their hits. (The first was 1969's "Try a Little Tenderness," which was sung solely by Cory.)
"Pieces of April" was not Three Dog Night's biggest hit, but it did extremely well on the Adult Contemporary Charts: #6 in the US and #9 in Canada. It's really quite beautiful--and a "Great Song" in its own right.
In 1979, Dave Loggins re-recorded and re-released HIS version, and it reached #22 on the AC Chart.
