The songwriting team of Lennon & McCartney was unquestionably one of the best in the history of rock & roll...but after the Beatles broke up, some Great Songs were written by the "other" team: Harrison and Starr!
For example: in 1971, they teamed up to write the song, "Photograph," and they originally recorded it in 1972.
They re-recorded it in 1973 and added it to Ringo's self-titled album. George played 12-string guitar on the track, and Ringo, of course, played drums and sang lead.
In a foreshadowing of Ringo's current "All Starr Band," which features a revolving cast of excellent musicians, both famous and semi-famous, "Photograph" also featured (among others) Nikki Hopkins on piano, Klaus Voorman on bass and Jim Keltner doubling on drums.
In an effort to recreate the "Wall of Sound" effect made popular by Phil Spector, the vocals and basic tracks were overdubbed with extra percussion, an orchestra and a choir.
Music critics LOVED the song, and so did the general public. "Photograph" was a worldwide hit: Top 10 in 11 countries, including #1 in the U.S., Canada and Australia.
When people would compliment Ringo on his composition, he would say (with typical Ringo humor), "I only know 3 chords. George would throw in 4 more, and everybody would think I was a genius."
Today, "Photograph" is considered to be one of the best post-Beatle songs by ANY of the Fab Four.
And I consider it to be a Great Song of 1973!
