Out of the Question - Gilbert O'Sullivan (1973) 5/9/23

Gilbert O'Sullivan packed four "Great Songs" into 2-years: 1972 and '1973: "Alone Again Naturally, "Clair, "Get Down," and "Out of the Question."

We've already highlighted the first three on the list, so today's we're looking at #4: "Out of the Question."

To be chronologically correct, the song was released between "Clair" and "Get Down," but interestingly, while the other 3 songs were released globally, "Out of the Question" was only released in the US and Canada.

My research did not uncover why this happened, only that it did... and it became a Great Song of '73" in both countries, reaching #1 in Canada and #2 in the US--on the Adult Contemporary Charts.

There's not much more I could find about the song itself, and as for Gilbert, after 1973, his popularity declined. There were some lawsuits against his management/record company, he took a hiatus from recording for a few years, and when he returned, he enjoyed new-found success in places like the UK and Japan.

Today, Gilbert is still out there. In fact, he released his 20th album in 2022, and it debuted on the British album chart at #26. It seems, however, that success in North America these days might be..."Out of the Question."

But today, we're looking at one of his "Great Songs of '73! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lV2E3q9rUXA
