Our Lips Are Sealed - Go-Gos (1981) 8/22/23

The Go-Gos are in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame...and rightfully so!

Their brand of infectious "new wave power pop" was a hit from the get-go(gos).

It started with their 1981 debut album, "Beauty and the Beat," and their very first single, "Our Lips Our Sealed."

The song was co-written by guitarist Jane Weidlin and Terry Hall. It's all about rumors and why the group didn't care WHAT was being said behind (or even in front) of their backs.

Lead singer Belinda Carlisle added spark to most of the song, while Jane sang the bridge.

Overall, it sounded like the whole group was gleefully flipping off anyone who had anything bad to say about them...and the video bears it out...as they joyride through town in a red convertible!

"Our Lips Our Sealed" went to #10 on Billboard's Disco Chart, while reaching #20 on the Hot 100! In Canada, the song reached #3 on the Top 40! (Note: I can vouch for the fact that it was a guaranteed floor filler at She-nannigans in Eau Claire.)

In 2000, Rolling Stone & MTV ranked the song at #57 on their collaborative List of the "100 Greatest Pop Songs," and in 2021, Rolling Stone added it to their list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time (at # 477).

"Our Lips Our Sealed:" Not just a great debut for the Go-Gos, but a Great Song of 1981 and beyond! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3kQlzOi27M

Tomorrow: One last chart topper for John.
