Only Yesterday - Carpenters (1975) 5/27/21

Writer's picture: Michael CookMichael Cook

It's hard to believe, but the Carpenters' string of Top 10 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 only lasted five years, from 1970's: "Close to You," (#1)*...to today's "Great Song of 1975:" "Only Yesterday! (#4)

It's somewhat easier to believe that on the Adult Contemporary Chart, they reached the Top 10 nine more times...through 1983's "Make Believe It's Your First Time," (#7)** released a few months after Karen's untimely death.

"Only Yesterday" was written by Richard with his songwriting partner, John Bettis, and was beautifully sung by Karen, who was not only in fine voice (as always), but still looked healthy and vibrant in the accompanying video.

There's not much more to say about the song except that it's "classic Carpenters" and one of their MANY "Great Songs of the '70s!" Enjoy!
