Today's "Great Song of 1971," "One Toke Over the Line" was a by "Brewer & Shipley made them a one-hit wonder--with an obvious backstory, and an epilogue featuring Lawrence Welk.
An-a-one, Ana-Two...
One Night, Mike Brewer and Tom Shipley were indulging in some cannabis when Tom said, "Man, I'm One Toke Over the Line Tonight."
And from that, a song was born. :-)
When it was released as a single from their album "Tarkio," it smoked up the charts in both the US (#10 on the Hot 100) and Canada (#5 on the Top 40).
Writer Hunter S. Thompson picked up on the song, and mentioned it in his novel, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," and Benicio Del Toro sang it in the 1998 movie of the same name.
And then there were Gail Farrell and Dick Dale, who covered it on The Lawrence Welk Show, with Lawrence calling it a "modern spiritual" (possibly because the words "Sweet Jesus" are repeated in the song).
One wonders if anyone on that show actually knew what they were singing about. :-)
