In 1982, lyricist/lead singer Cy Curnin of England's The Fixx was fed up with lying politicians, and decided to write about it.
One thing led to another...and "One Thing Leads to Another" became a big hit, and a "Great Song of the '80s.
In a 2012 interview, Cy explained the overall meaning of the song: "If you're going to be a liar, you'd better be a damn good liar and remember what you said, or the whole thing's going to get pear shaped." That was 30 years ago, and look where the system is now."
Yet another decade has gone by since that interview...and Cy is still right on the money--probably even more so.
When I said it was a big hit...I meant in North America. It stiffed in the UK, but topped the Top 40 in Canada, and here in the US, it was a Billboard triple chart hit: #2 on the Mainstream Rock Chart, #4 on the Hot 100, and #14 on the Dance Chart.
The video was an early MTV staple...but you'd be hard-pressed to find any visible political meaning to it. It was more weird than anything else...but if you click the link below, maybe you'll see something I'm missing.
Regardless, "One Thing Leads to Another" by The Fixx, (from the album "Reach the Beach") is a Great Song of 1982 that still resonates today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHYIGy1dyd8
