On the Radio (1979) 7/13/20

The 1980 film, “Foxes,” was notable for a number of reasons. It was Jodie Foster's last film before taking a long break to attend Yale, it was Adrian Lynn's first film as a director, and it was universally adored by critics and moviegoers as one of the best “coming of age films of all time.

In late 1979, before the film's premiere, Casablanca Records decided to release a single from the soundtrack, and that song became one of the last “Great Songs of the '70s.”

As the new decade began, Donna Summer's “On the Radio” peaked on 4 different Billboard charts at the same time: #5 on the Hot 100, #8 on the Dance Club Chart, #9 on the Soul Chart, and a modest #26 on the Adult Contemporary Chart. It was her 10th Top 10 song, and the last of 8 consecutive Top 5s! In Canada, it reached #2 on the Top 40.

”On the Radio” was obviously a hit...on the radio...but as a club DJ, I also found it to be a “Great Song” to use as a segue from a slow set back into the uptempo stuff.
