On Our Own - Bobby Brown (1989) 8/20/23

Writer's picture: Michael CookMichael Cook

Everybody remembers Ghostbusters II, right? That's when the original cast got back together for another round of supernatural hjinx.

In short, a threat to the human race is brought about by the sheer volume of negative emotions emanating from humanity, and it's up to the gang to save mankind from itself.

The film was almost universally panned by critics, and much of the cast wasn't fond of it, either...but it did generate a Great Song of 1989.

"On Our Own" by Bobby Brown was certainly not as popular or as catchy (Who ya gonna call?) as Ray Parker Jr's original Ghostbusters theme, HOWEVER...it's stands by itself as a hip-hop masterpiece!

It certainly busted up the Billboard Charts: #1 Hip-Hop, and #2 on the Hot 100. It also reached #2 on the Dance Singles Chart!

But probably what really made the song popular was the video, which featured a number of cast members and other celebrities, including a future president. See how many you can spot!

"On Our Own" by Bobby Brown: living in the shadow of a classic film and theme song...but holding its own as a Great Song of 1989! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2sLeruRZio
