Today we say goodbye to Olivia Newton-John, who passed away at age 73 after a long battle with breast cancer. For a complete and thorough obituary, I defer to Variety Magazine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBo_eDreKtk
Over the past 3 years, I've highlighted several of her "Great Songs of the '70s," encompassing her solo material, and of course, her songs from "Grease."
Note: Her biggest hit, "Physical," came in 1981, but I'm including a link to it below as well.
There are many other songs worth highlighting, but there is one song in particular that I hadn't gotten to yet.
In 1974, "I Honestly Love You" was a #1 hit in Australia, Sweden, Canada, and was Olivia's first #1 in the US. Up North,, it topped the Top 40, Adult Contemporary AND Country Charts. In the US, the only difference was a #6 peak on the Country Chart.
At the 1975 Grammy Awards, the song won "Record of the Year" and "Best Pop Performance-Female."
And then it reached the charts twice more!
In 1977, a re-release reached #1 on Canada's Adult Contemporary Chart, and in 1998, a new version with background vocals by Babyface reached #16 on Billboard's Country Chart and #18 on the AC Chart.
"I Honestly Love You" was--and still is--a "Great Song" by Olivia Newton-John. Rest in Peace, Olivia.
