Today we answer the question, "Can a song miss the Top 25 TWICE and still be Great?"
Submitted for your approval:
In 1979, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band released "Old Time Rock & Roll" as a single, and while it received a huge amount of airplay on album-oriented rock (AOR) stations, it only went to #28 on the U.S. Hot 100, and #31 in Canada.
Skip to 1983: In the film, "Risky Business," Tom Cruise dances to it in his underwear, and the song charts again--this time at #48 in the U.S. It did not chart in Canada.
Those numbers aren't very impressive...but over the years, thanks to classic rock stations and jukeboxes, the song has literally become a standard. In fact, (and this is a source I've never quoted before), The Amusement and Music Operators (Jukebox) association has ranked it as the #2 jukebox single of all time!
And speaking as a former club DJ, I can tell you this song NEVER failed to fill the dance floor. Thankfully, I never saw anyone dance in their underwear!
Here's today's "Great Song of the '70s" (and '80s):
