Nobody Does It Better (1977) 2/26/20

Updated: Feb 23, 2020

"The Spy Who Loved Me" was the 10th James Bond film, and the third to star Roger Moore as 007.

The theme song was the first since "Dr. No" that had a different title than the film.

"Nobody Does It Better" was written by Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager, and they handed it over to Carly Simon to sing over the opening credits.

Marvin, Carole and Carly ended up with a "Great Song of the '70s! It went to #2 on the US Hot 100, and would have gone to #1...if it weren't for--ahem--the "1977 Debby Boone/You Light Up My Life" juggernaut.

They did all right, though...going to #1 for SEVEN weeks on the US Adult Contemporary chart. The song also went to #1 in Canada and Ireland, and was a Top 10 smash in the UK, France, Norway and Australia.

The song was nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe, but lost both to--you guessed it--"You Light Up My Life."

At the 1978 Grammy Awards,"Nobody Does It Better" was nominated for "Song of the Year" and Carly herself was up for "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance."

In 2004, the song was honored by the American Film Institute as the 67th greatest song as part of their 100 Years Series.

Not bad for a song about 007's sexual prowess. :-)

This quirky little video features Carly singing with Marvin Hamlisch on the piano!

Enjoy!
