(Note: The last link below is to Chicago's latest hit, and it is, IMHO, Spectacular!)
But first...
With its distinctive horns and lead vocals by Peter Cetera and Donnie Dacus, it was easy to identify 1979's "No Tell Lover" (from the album "Mean Streets") as a Chicago classic from the get-go.
Unfortunately, it was also the last "Great Song" by Chicago for more than 3 years! (In fact, they didn't make the Top 50 again until 1982, when they went all the way to #1 with "Hard to Say I'm Sorry."
Chartwise, "No Tell Lover" reached #14 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Cashbox Top 40. On Billboard's Easy Listening chart, it peaked at a solid #5.
Those numbers mean very little in the overall scheme of things--except for this: If Chicago never had another hit, they would have closed out the '70s...and their careers ...with a "Great Song:" "No Tell Lover."
Note: They've actually had more than a dozen hits since 1979...including their latest from just a few months ago: "if This is Goodbye!" (#16 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_x4n0kYn01o
