In 1970, "Power Pop," a sub-genre of rock and roll music that featured "hooks, harmonies and happiness with a hint of longing and despair," became a little more popular when Pete Ham of Badfinger wrote today's "Great Song of the '70s." But it almost didn't happen.
Badfinger was one of the few acts (other than the Beatles, separately and collectively) signed to Apple Records. For some reason, Apple management in the U.K. was not inclined to release the song as a single--until Al Steckler, Apple's director of operations in New York, decided it was strong enough to be a hit.
He was right!
"No Matter What" was a Top 10 hit in 7 countries, including South Africa (#1), The U.K. (#5), Canada (#7) and the U.S. (#8).
