Never Gonna Fall In Love Again (1976) 3/6/20

Updated: Mar 7, 2020

Before I get to today's "Great Song of the '70s," please indulge me by listening to the first 25 seconds of this link. You can certainly listen to all of it, if you like--it might surprise you!

Sergei Rachmaninov wrote his brilliant Symphony No.2 in E minor, Op.27 Movement III in 1906-07.

Seventy years later, Eric Carmen adapted it into one of his biggest hits!

In fact, it was the follow-up song--lyrically and literally--to "All By Myself" (also inspired by Rachmaninov) from his debut album. Eric was a lot more "jaunty" than Sergei, and that proved to be a good idea.

"Never Gonna Fall in Love Again" went to #1 on the US and Canadian Adult Contemporary charts. It also went to #1 on the Canadian Top 40...and #11 on the US Hot 100.

If you're going to create a classic song...using a real classic is a good place to start. Just make sure the original copyright has expired. Carmen didn't, and he ended up paying royalties to the Rachmaninov estate.

Even so, It's still a "Great Song of 1906--and 1976!"
