My Sharona (1979) 2/8/20

Updated: Mar 1, 2020

This is my 100th "Great Song of the '70s!" Thanks for following along. Onward to 200! :-)

Here's a question that was asked quite often during 1979: "Who's Sharona?"

When The Knack exploded on the scene with their 1979 debut album, "Get the Knack," their very first single release spent 6 weeks at the top of Billboard's Hot 100 chart and was named Billboard's Top Single of the Year.

It also went to #1 in Canada, France and Australia, and was a Top 15 hit in 7 other countries. Pretty darn impressive, especially for a debut!

So who was Sharona? Doug Fieger, The Knack's lead singer and rhythm guitarist met Sharona Alperin when he was 25 and she was 17, and they were a couple for the next 4 years.

Doug wanted to express his feelings for Sharona in a song, so he got together with lead guitarist Berton Averre and worked it out. Averre was against using Sharona's name...but Doug talked him into it.

To this day, I can't imagine this "Great Song of the '70s" using any other name than Sharona. (Weird Al's "My Bologna" doesn't count!) :-)
