After “Bridge Over Troubled Water” in 1970, Simon and Garfunkel split up, and it wasn't pretty. They spent the next few years taking shots at each other, while scoring a number of competing solo hits.(Paul had more, but Art held his own.)
In 1975, as Paul was writing material for a new album, he decided—as sort of a peace offering—to write a song for Art's new album as well.
After Paul played it for Art, they agreed to get back together and record again—if only for this one song—which turned out to be another “Great Song of the '70s” for the duo.
“My Little Town” was released on both Paul's AND Art's new solo albums, and also released as a single.
It's a song about someone who grew up in a small town and couldn't wait to get away from it, something many people who grew up in small towns could identify with.
The proof was in the charts: #1 in the US on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart, and #2 on the matching chart in Canada. It also hit #9 on both the US and Canadian Top 40.
In October of '75, Simon & Garfunkel sang the song on the second episode of a new TV show called “NBC's Saturday Night.” which resulted in even more sales.
Fans were excited to see Paul & Art together again, but unfortunately, it didn't last. Even though they sporadically re-teamed over the years—most notably for 1981's Concert in Central Park” which drew a crowd of 500,000 people—they do not get along, and now that Paul has retired from touring, they most likely will never perform together again.
On that sad, note, from 1975, here is Simon & Garfunkel with a “Great, but Sad Song of the '70s.”
