In 1989, Rod Stewart sings country!
Well, not really...but his Great Song, "My Heart Can't Tell You No," was originally written for Barbara Mandrell, who turned it down.
Somehow, Rod picked up on it, and released a decidedly NOT Country version of the song that climbed the Adult Contemporary Chart to #3...and The Hot 100 to #4.
Critics called it "appealing" and "an infectious singalong." No word on what Barbara thought of it...but she never recorded it.
Sara Evans, on the other hand, released a cover version in 2012, which peaked at just #21 on the Country Chart.
So maybe Barbara made the right choice--who knows.
But Rod Stewart certainly made the RIGHT choice:
"My Heart Can't Tell You No" is a Great Song of 1989.
Tomorrow: Back to the '70s....with Bad Company.
