The 1976 version of the film, "A Star is Born," starring Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson was a huge success at the box office, grossing $80 million on a budget of $6 million--making it the second highest grossing film of the year. ("Rocky" was #1.)
Overall, reviews were mixed, but critics were nearly unanimous in their praise for the musical score. In fact, at Oscar time, "A Star is Born" was nominated for Best Score and as well as Best Original Song for "Evergreen" (as sung by Barbra).
"Evergreen" won, of course, but the whole thing might have been different if producers had replaced "Evergreen" with a different song they they had been considering: "My Heart Belongs to Me."
Instead, they held onto the song until Barbra's next album, "Superman," came out in 1977.
This was a very smart move.
No Oscars were involved, but when "My Heart Belongs to Me" was released as a single, it shot to #1 on the Adult Contemporary Charts in both the US and Canada. On the Top 40: #3 up North and #4 in the States.
So in essence, Barbra released two "Great Songs" in a row--a very "Barbra-Like" thing to do.
