My Eyes Adored You - Frankie Valli (And The Four Seasons) (1974-75) 6/30/22

It seems rather odd that in the early '70s, the legendary Four Seasons were signed to...Motown Records!

What's also true is that, by all accounts, it was NOT a match Rock & Roll heaven. Motown couldn't figure out what to do with them...and in the end, let them go...right before they made a comeback.

The guys had recorded a song that Motown decided NOT to release, so Frankie Valli bought the rights for $4,000, and the group left Motown. They started pitching the song to other labels, and were turned down by the big shots at Atlantic and Capitol...before Larry Uttal, the owner of Private Stock Records, signed them up and agreed to release the song. There was one caveat, however: Larry wanted it released with only Frankie's name on the label. It was an odd request, all things considered, but it certainly paid off! In late 1974/early 1975,"My Eyes Adored You" was a Top 5 hit in several countries--reaching #1 in New Zealand and on Billboard's Hot 100. It also peaked at #2 on Billboard's Easy Listening Chart and Canada's Top 40. It became a "Great Song of the '70s," and not only revitalized The Four Seasons as a group, but kick-started a solo career for Frankie!

Trivia: Several artists have covered the song, but to me, the most interesting was by THIS guy:
