Every now and then, a "Great Jazz Song" sneaks into the mainstream and becomes a #1 hit. In 1979, it happened twice.
Late in the year, Herb Alpert took "Rise" to #1 on the Hot 100.
We highlighted that song back on 2/28/20, and you can read about it here:

But before that, in July, the jazz fusion group Spiro Gyra went to #1 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart with a "Great Song" called "Morning Dance."
This Jamaican-flavored instrumental featured some outstanding alto sax playing by group member Jay Beckenstein, and some excellent work on the steel pan drum.
It was light and breezy--just a "Great Song" overall--and that's why it crossed over into the mainstream.
If you've never heard it before, you're in for a tropical treat! If you already know the song, relax, have a Pina Colada, and enjoy it again! "Morning Dance" by Spiro Gyra: a "Great Song of 1979."
