Al Jarreau was primarily a jazz artist, but that didn't stop some of his Great Songs from showing up on other charts-- Including the Rhythm & Blues Chart, Soul Chart, and The Hot 100.
His biggest hit topped the Adult Contemporary Chart in 1987, when he recorded and released the theme song to one of the most popular TV Shows of the '80s: "Moonlighting," Starring Bruce Willis & Cybill Shepherd as bickering private investigators.
Al wrote the song along with Lee Holdridge, and recorded a number of short and long versions to run during the opening and/or closing credits from 1983-86.
In 1987, however, Al recorded another version for single release (produced by Nile Rogers of Chic), and THIS version was the hit!
In addition to topping the Adult Contemporary Charts in the US & Canada, it also reached the Top 10 in the UK and Ireland. It was then honored in 1988 with two Grammy Award nominations: Best Pop Vocal Performance, and Best Song written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television Show!
(Note: Al Actually recorded two versions of the second version: one with a saxophone solo, and the other a with harmonica solo. Both are linked below.)
But in the end, ALL versions of "Moonlighting" by Al Jarreau were "Great Songs of the '80s!
