Minute by Minute - Doobie Brothers (1979) 8/30/31

How do you follow a "Great Song" that not only went to #1 in the US and Canada, but won Grammy Awards for "Song of the Year" AND "Record of the 'Year?"

That's the problem the Doobie Brothers faced when trying to follow up 1979's

"What a Fool Believes," which we highlighted just over a year ago on 8/25/20.

The solution? Go back and release the title cut from the album that featured "Fool."

"Minute By Minute" is a soulful, bluesy number that received a lot of airplay, and charted in the Top 20 in both Canada (#17) and the US (#13). Critics raved about the song, with glowing reviews from publications like Rolling Stone, Billboard, and Spin. It was even nominated for "Song of the Year," but the Doobies were beaten by themselves! (See above!) In 1980, Peabo Bryson released an excellent cover version that went to #12 on Billboard's Rhythm and Blues Chart. "Minute by Minute" by the Doobie Brothers--a worthy follow-up to "What a Fool Believes" and a "great Song of 1979." Doobies:
