There are quite a few songs with the title "Midnight Blue," but today, we're highlighting the only one that could be considered a "Great Song of the '70s."
(Trivia: George Harrison wrote a song with the same title, but when informed that Melissa Manchester had beaten him to the punch, he retitled his completely different song "I'm Tired of Midnight Blue." Lou Gramm and Enya also recorded songs with Midnight Blue in the title.)
Melissa and prolific songwriter Carol Bayer Sager came up with THEIR "Midnight Blue" after some conversations they had about Carol's troubled marriage to her first husband, Andrew Sager.
Carol personally believed she was better at communicating her feelings through lyrics, as opposed to actually talking things out, so the song was essentially autobiographical.
Melissa's interpretation was spot on, which most certainly contributed to its popularity; people could relate.
The song reached the top of the Adult Contemporary Charts in both Canada and the US. At the same time, it peaked at #5 on the Canadian Top 40 and #6 on Billboard's Hot 100. Billboard also ranked it as the #1 AC Song of the Year for 1975!
