In 1970, singer/songwriter, and all-purpose genius Harry Nilsson was walking through the woods near his home when he noticed that everything had a point.
In his words: "I looked at the trees and I realized that they all came to points, and the little branches came to points, and the houses came to point. I thought, 'Oh! Everything has a point, and if it doesn't, then there's a point to it." (Note: There may have been drugs involved.)
Harry decided to a write a story: a whimsical fable called "The Point," about a boy named Oblio, who is the only person with a round head in his Pointed Village, and his trusty dog, Arrow.
Of course, he wrote music for it and, the song "Me & My Arrow" became a hit, as well as a "Great Song of 1971," reaching #3 on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Chart.
"The Point" was made into an animated TV movie, featuring Dustin Hoffman as the voice of Oblio, and Mike Lookinland (Bobby on "The Brady Bunch!") as Oblio. On the the home video release, Dustin was replaced by Ringo Starr!
In 1977, it was adapted into a stage musical, which ran in London, starring Davy Jones and Mickey Dolenz of the Monkees.
FUN FACT (from my friend and NYC Radio legend Anita Bonita): "True story about Harry's Arrow: It was one of the few cases in which the lyrics did not need to be changed for an advertising campaign." From 1978: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dg_c8WVTq0o
