I'll get right to the point: “Maybe I'm Amazed” by Paul McCartney was a “Great Song of the '70s,” TWICE!
In 1969, just as it became clear the Beatles were about to break up, Paul was a wreck. He was deeply depressed, but thankfully Linda was there to offer emotional support. He wrote the song to thank her, then jumped right into recording it. (TRIVIA: He played ALL the instruments on the track!)
It was released on his 1970 solo album, “McCartney,” but he declined to release it as a single. Fortunately, that didn't stop radio stations from playing it...and it was all over the airwaves, worldwide. Because it was never officially released, it never officially charted, but everyone loved the song: music critics, disc jockeys and of course, fans and radio listeners.
Time passed, and in 1976, Paul and his new band, Wings, released a live version of the song (from their “Wings Over America” album), and this time, as a single,“Maybe I'm Amazed” climbed into the Top 10 in both the US (#10 on the Hot 100), and Canada (#9 on the Top 40).
Many people believe BOTH versions are masterpieces—and Rolling Stone Magazine not only called the song “one of Paul's best,” they put it on their list of the “Top 500 Songs of All Time!” (#347)
