Margaritaville (1977) 3/28/20

When does a song become so iconic, it overshadows every other great song the artist has ever recorded?

Perhaps it's when merchandising takes over...and a multitude of products carry its name: restaurants, chicken wings, chips & salsa, pie filling, women's apparel, and bicycles--just to name a few.

In 1977, Jimmy Buffet released his album, "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes," and the single

"Margaritaville" became a cultural phenomenon.

It's the story of man recovering from a breakup by spending a summer drinking away his sorrows at a tropical beach resort. By the end, he's gone from blaming no one...to blaming himself.

The song was hotter than Key West, where he wrote most of the song, and it burned its way up the charts!

In the US, it went to #1 on the Adult Contemporary Chart, #8 on the Hot 100, and #13 on the Country Chart. In Canada, it was #1, #4 and #8 on the corresponding charts.

Today, the song is synonymous with the word "PARTY," and whether you're one of Jimmy's Parrothead fans, a "Great Songs of the '70s" fan or both...you can't help but love this song! If not, it's--in Jimmy's words--your "own damn fault!" :-)
