According to John Hornsby, today's Great Song of 1987 is about " missing someone badly; trying to pull through when so many things remind you of her–a tune, a ferry whistle, and mainly a summer storm."
John is the brother of Bruce Hornsby, and together they wrote "Mandolin Rain" for their group, Bruce Hornsby & the Range.
Of course, the song features the mandolin, played by group member David Mansfield.
(Note: A mandolin is an 8-stringed instrument similar to a lute and played with a pick like a guitar.)
The song was a huge hit in both the US and Canada, climbing to #1 on the Adult Contemporary Charts in both countries. Here in the States, it also reached #2 on the Album Rock Chart, and #4 on the Hot 100. It even cracked the Country Chart at #38!
